Go See Ain't No Back on a Merry-Go-Round
No one should judge your date night choices. You know who you are. . . .
Last weekend, my spouse and I had a date night—the kids were babysitting and make that loot, so we went out. We decided to see a movie and saw a wonderful documentary about the Glen Echo Desegregation Boycott of 1960. My day job is as a federal land management employee for the Dept. of the Interior and Glen Echo is managed by the National Park Service. At work the following week, I mentioned it to my colleague, who chuckled. I asked what was funny and she said “On a date night, you chose to see a film related to your work.”
In my defense, my first choice was Sinners.
Please go see, Ain’t No Back on a Merry-Go-Round, by Ilana Trachtman when it plays near you in your community. You’ll meet notable Civil Rights Era activists when they were mere teenagers, cooperative community residents and advocates at the end of the Jim Crow era, and intersectional groups finding their respective voices.
It was a great date night choice of a lesser known desegregation victory. An interesting story of Howard students and the student group NAG and Glen Echo neighbors working together. The Union connection was also an important factor.
thanks for the tip.
